I was inspired to create this piece as a homage to my Scottish roots, my great grandfather was a Macdonald. I visited in Autumn 2024. I was in awe of dramatic light and stunning wild landscape. It feels apt to depict what was once a battlefield with the total heartache of the world.
Much of Scotland was covered by trees 5,000 years ago, but only fragments of the ancient Caledonian Forest survive after centuries of tree felling and intensive gazing. I felt inspired by efforts to rewild native woodlands and restore biodiversity.
This which will provide hope for rare and endangered species including red squirrels, pine marten, capercaillie and rare mosses and lichen which rely on native trees.
I wanted to capture the resilience of nature its ability to heal, recover and restore. It teaches us that we can find light and hope in even the darkest of times.
